DEVELOPING A TRAIN TRAM SYSTEM IN THE TAMPERE REGION
A report commissioned by the city of Tampere, 'The utilisation of the heavy rail network in public transportation in the Tampere Region', was completed in January 2003. The working group preparing the report was unanimous in recommending the construction of a train tram system for the Tampere Region.
A train tram system would create a modern and environmentally responsible traffic system, providing a basis for land use and for the balanced development of the city.
According to the report, a train tram system using the existing heavy rail network would suit the city region and would strengthen the accessibility of the city centre as well as the development potential of the regional centres located along the network. A traffic system based on the heavy rail network would also improve the potential for mobility of the area residents, increase the use of public transportation and promote the environmental protection aims of Tampere as a pioneering city.
The construction of a new kind of traffic system calls for a survey concerning the adaptation of bus transportation to such future plans. Decisions moving the planning forward toward the goal of realizing a train tram system are expected in spring 2003.
Mayor Jarmo Rantanen, in a statement to the press made at the public event releasing the report, said: 'The train tram system would support the sustainable development of the Tampere Region not only by enabling a balanced city structure, but in other ways as well. It would increase the use of public transportation, thus decreasing the overall environmental damages caused by traffic. Air emissions, noise and energy consumption would decrease, while the possibilities for human mobility would increase. On the whole, an environmentally friendly way of life would be strengthened. Not to mention increasing safety, which in turn decreases human suffering due to traffic accidents. Indeed, train trams would support only the city's strategic goals related to the environment, but many other goals as well. One of the most important of them is the development of regional cooperation among Tampere and its neighbouring counties.'
Train tram system
The plan for the Tampere train tram system comprises two main train tram lines, both of which have extensions in the western and southern parts of the area. The network would serve the Tampere region, which is home to some 350 000 inhabitants living in five counties.
According to the plan, the Tampere train tram system would use existing heavy railroad about 40 kilometers, 2/3 of the total length of the lines.
One of the train tram lines would have two extensions in Ylöjärvi and Lentävänniemi on the western side of Tampere that would link up to form a shared section between the Travel Centre around the railway station and the terminus in the largest suburb in Finland, Hervanta. The second train tram line would have its two extensions in the southern and eastern parts of the city, near the Lempäälä border and in the Kangasala district, the terminus being in the City of Nokia. These extensions would link up on the main line to the Travel Centre.
The train tram line would run in a tunnel under the Tammerkoski rapids in the city centre with two underground stations.
The survey on the potential for building this network was made by the City of Tampere, the Ministry for Transport and Communications, the Finnish Rail Administration, the Finnish railway company VR Ltd and the Council of the Tampere Region.
