China's electric car drive, led by BYD, leaves global brands behind
Reuters skrev:China's auto market, the world’s largest, is accelerating toward an electric future – leaving established global brands stuck in the slow lane.
[...]
BYD’s sales in China are up almost 69% this year, giving it an 11% share of the overall car market, more than the Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) brand or the Toyota (7203.T) brand, according to an analysis of sales data.
"The stratification of this market into clear winners and losers is becoming clear," Bill Russo, founder of consultancy Automobility said in a note issued on Tuesday. "And there are very few winners and a whole lot of losers."
[...]
BYD’s Song plug-in hybrid SUV, with a starting price of about $20,000, outsold the Nissan Sylphy, which had been China’s top-selling car for three straight years. BYD’s Dolphin EV, which starts at about $17,000, was ahead of the Volkswagen Passat.
Omställningen till elfordon går fortare än väntat. På bilsidan är det BYD som
dominerar. På bussidan - också BYD. Men Tesla och Solaris leder utanför Kina.
Why China Could Dominate the Next Big Advance in Batteries
The New York Times skrev:In Changsha, graduates from Central South University’s leafy campus are working on sodium battery technology at nearby research laboratories run by companies including Germany’s BASF, the world’s biggest chemical maker. One of the first large factories for sodium battery chemicals is already under construction a few blocks away from the labs.
[...]
Out of 20 sodium battery factories now planned or already under construction around the world, 16 are in China, according to Benchmark Minerals, a consulting firm. In two years, China will have nearly 95 percent of the world’s capacity to make sodium batteries. Lithium battery production will still dwarf sodium battery output at that point, Benchmark predicts, but advances in sodium are accelerating.
[...]
Unlike lithium batteries, the latest sodium batteries do not require scarce materials like cobalt, a mineral mined mainly in Africa under conditions that have alarmed human rights groups. The newest sodium batteries also do not require nickel, which comes mainly from mines in Indonesia, Russia and the Philippines.

While salt is abundant, the United States accounts for over 90 percent of the world’s readily mined reserves for soda ash, the main industrial source of sodium. Deep under the southwestern Wyoming desert lies a vast deposit of soda ash, formed 50 million years ago. Soda ash there has long been extracted for America’s glass manufacturing industry.
I framtiden byts litiumet i litiumjonbatterier sannolikt ut mot natrium. Fördelarna är många, och nu kommer
nästa generations batterier ut på marknaden:
electrive.com skrev:CATL unveiled the first generation of its sodium-ion battery in July 2021 and said that it would build a supply chain for the new technology by 2023. Thus, the battery giant would still be on its self-imposed schedule if Chery is about to launch such models.

The specifications for CATL’s sodium-ion battery for Chery remain unknown. In 2021, CATL stated that the cells at the time had an energy density of 160 Wh/kg and promised an increase to 200 Wh/kg for the next generation. That would make the sodium ion cells almost comparable to LFP cells. At an event in November 2022, a CATL representative promised EV batteries for electric cars with a range of up to 400 kilometres.
In addition, CATL talked about mixed battery packs of lithium-ion cells and sodium-ion cells in the past to complement the advantages of both technologies – higher energy density for lithium-ion cells and the benefits in cost, raw material procurement, fast charging and low-temperature performance of Na-ion cells.
