The Globe and Mail: Montreal rolls out bike-sharing plan
Paris has Vélib, Barcelona has Bicing, and as of today, Montreal will start to showcase its own European-style bike-sharing program with a fetching name: Bixi. The program will get its official rollout in the spring, with 2,400 bicycles available at 300 stations across the city.

"It's personalized mass transit," said Alain Ayotte of Stationnement Montreal, the city parking authority that developed the program.

Ordet Bixi är en kombination av "bicyclette" (det vill säga cykel) och "taxi".

Benämningen "personalized mass transit" ger mig lite dubbla känslor. Ska man ha det, så är det montrealmodellen jag förespråkar.

The sharing plans include not just Paris’s Vélib’, with its 20 000 bicycles, but also wildly popular programs with thousands of bicycles in major cities like Barcelona and Lyon, France.

For mayors looking to ease congestion and prove their environmental bona fides, bike-sharing has provided a simple solution: for the price of a bus, they invest in a fleet of bicycles, avoiding years of construction and approvals required for a subway. For riders, joining means cut-rate transportation and a chance to contribute to the planet’s well-being.

The shared bicycles in Barcelona, Lyon and Paris are heavily used, logging about 10 rides a day, according to officials in these cities.

Projekt Velib i Paris har inspirerat London att införa ett liknande system med hyrcyklar. Man tänker sig ett införande 2010 och skall ha 6 000 cyklar på 400 cykelstationer. Se mer på http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ Senare kan systemet komma att utvidgas.

Lånecyklarna i Lyon heter Vélo'v och introducerades 2005. Där finns 3000 cyklar och 22 000 resor görs med cyklarna varje dag. Hälften av resorna som görs med cyklarna hade annars skett med kollektivtrafik, och 7% med bil.

Lånecyklar kan alltså avlasta kollektivtrafiken i centrum, där det ofta är trängsel i vagnarna och där avstånden dessutom är korta och cyklingsbara.

New York har gjort en översiktligt studie på att införa ett lånecykelsystem i tre steg med 50 000 cyklar.

London satsar på 6000 lånecyklar, men de ska inte finnas i anslutning till järnvägstationer eftersom efterfrågan där antas bli för stor.

The Bike Show skrev:TfL’s main aim for the project is to relieve pressure from the overstrained buses and tubes. The market research estimates that 39 per cent of the users of of hire bikes will be people who had previously walked their journey, 30 per cent will be former tube passengers and 24 per cent will be former bus passengers. TfL’s projections are that the scheme will result in a 10 per cent increase cycle traffic in London, with each hire bike being used an average of 8 times a day.
